Introduction

Why Bellbottoms and Rollerskates? Well, my name is Karen and I’m from Silver Spring, MD. When I was younger I lived in Hyattsville, MD. and went to school in Takoma Park. One Halloween I went trick-or-treating as Tootie from The Facts of Life. I roller skated up and down the hill to my heart’s delight. As The Muslim Hippie, I”ve carried on my legacy of a 70’s kid who never grew up. This podcast is my homage to my childhood.

Guys. I really am Muslim. I promise. But when I was a Christian I went to Hughes United Methodist Church in Wheaton, MD. My minister gave a sermon about personal responsibility. So he talked to us about the Jimmy Buffet song Margaritaville. He said what it had always meant to him and how we could use that as a reminder to keep ourselves on the straight and narrow. I loved that. It’s stuck with me all these years. Even as a Muslim.
